We are very fortunate that the New Forest is blessed with over  100  miles  of well marked  cycle paths, suitable for all ages and  abilities.

Guests can leave their car at home and travel by train to the New Forest, bringing their bicycle with them, on the train.

There is a direct railway line from London Waterloo to Ashurst New Forest!

Maps are readily available in one of the New Forest cycle hire shops, campsites and many other retail outlets in the New Forest.

Bicycles can be hired from several local   Bike Hire companies.

At Forest Gate Lodge, we can keep your cycles secure for you, when not in use.

Walking in the New Forest

The opportunities for walking are endless in the New Forest.

Whether you fancy a short stroll in the Forest, or an all day hike along the coast, the choice is yours.

Horse riding in the New Forest is truly magical, and one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty all around us.

In and around the New Forest there are many stables and horse riding offering  riding to beginners and to experienced riders alike.

There are stables at Beaulieu, Bramshaw, Brockenhurst, Burley, Fordingbridge, Minstead, New Milton and Sway.

Golf in the New Forest

The nearest course to Forest Gate Lodge is the New Forest Golf Club, which is only 5 minutes from us, has 18 holes, and welcomes visitors.

Other local courses include: Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club; Paultons Park (and high quality driving range); Hamptworth Golf & Country Club; Burley Golf Club; Bramshaw Golf Club; Highcliffe Golf Club; and Barton On Sea Golf Club.

 

Watersports

A whole variety of different water sports can be enjoyed in the New Forest area.

The Solent is renowned throughout the world as one of the ultimate sailing locations. Lymington and Keyhaven are the two main harbors in the area, both  provide launching points and some moorings for visiting boats. Other launching slips are available at Lepe and Calshot Activity Centre, where you can also hire equipment for windsurfing and take part in numerous watersports.

Situated just outside Lymington , you will find Mrs Tee’s Wild Mushrooms. You can book a one day course, lunch included, to learn invaluable information on the identification, seasonality, preparation and use of both wild and cultivated mushrooms. Guests will also be taught which mushrooms are not safe to cook and eat.

West Quay shopping centre is a  fabulous place to ‘shop til you drop’, and it is only 15 or so minutes by car from Forest Gate Lodge.
